Firefox 54 Claims to Be Faster, Use Less RAM Than Earlier Version

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Firefox 54 is already available for download
  • The new version uses up to four content processes
  • New version allows browser to handle complex web pages better

Mozilla’s Firefox browser has had problems with memory management in the past and with the latest version – Firefox 54 – the company claims that it has finally achieved a breakthrough. Firefox 54, which was released on Tuesday, has been claimed by the company to bring efficient RAM management and speed improvements to the browser.

In order to achieve these improvements, Firefox 54 uses up to four content processes as part of Mozilla’s ‘E10s’ project, instead of one used by earlier versions. In simple terms, this means that a complex page, with extensive multimedia content, now ends up having less impact on responsiveness and speed of other tabs, said Nick Nguyen, Vice President, Product, Firefox, in a blog post.

“By separating the tabs into separate processes, we make better use of the hardware on your computer, so Firefox can deliver you more of the Web you love, with less waiting,” Nguyen wrote.

Nguyen adds that in company’s tests, Firefox 54 was found using significantly less RAM as compared to other browsers on Windows 10, macOS, and Linux.

Firefox 54 Claims to Be Faster, Use Less RAM Than Earlier Version

The Firefox 54 release has been described as a phase in Mozilla’s E10s initiative and going ahead, the company might very well increase the cap on the maximum number of processes used by the browser. The Verge points out that users can already customise the upper limit by entering “about:config” in the address bar and adjusting the settings themselves. Interested users can download the latest version of the browser from Mozilla’s official website or simply update their existing Firefox release to the latest version and check they are on Firefox v54.

Mozilla seems to be working to improve one aspect of its browser at a time. After introducing Quantum Compositor with Firefox 53 to reduce crashes, the company focused on RAM management and speed improvements with the next release.

As Google’s Chrome browser is used by a much larger chunk of users than Firefox, taking care of these issues one at a time might convince more people to give Firefox a try once again.

Lenovo's Global PC Shipments Fall 1 Percent, Slower Than Market Decline

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Revenue from PC and smart device business fell 2 percent to $30.1 billion
  • Lenovo blamed a 4 percent drop in revenue on difficult macro environment
  • Lenovo said its worldwide PC market share rose to 21.4 percent

China’s Lenovo Group, the world’s largest personal computer maker, said its global PC unit shipments fell 1 percent in the year ending in March, against a market decline of 3 percent, as consumer demand continued its downward trend.

Revenue from its personal computer and smart device business, which accounts 70 percent of total revenue, fell 2 percent to $30.1 billion (roughly Rs. 1,94,226 crores).

Lenovo blamed a 4 percent drop in total revenue to $43 billion (roughly Rs. 2,77,450 crores) on difficult macro environment, its own business transformation efforts, and component supply constraints in the second half of the year.

Lenovo's Global PC Shipments Fall 1 Percent, Slower Than Market Decline

For the full year ended March, Lenovo posted a profit of $535 million (roughly Rs. 3,451 crores), reversing a loss of $128 million a year prior. The result compared with the $569 million average of 24 estimates.

According to market intelligence firm Gartner, worldwide PC shipments totalled 62.2 million units in the first quarter of 2017, the 10th consecutive quarterly decline and the first time since 2007 for the figure to drop below 63 million.

Lenovo said its worldwide PC market share for the full year rose 0.4 percentage point to a record high of 21.4 percent, though that is down from 22.4 percent in the previous quarter.

“Despite market conditions that will remain challenging in the short term, the Group exited the year with stronger organization allowing for sharper customer focus and more compelling product portfolio across all our business,” Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Yang Yuanqing said in a filing.

PC competition took a step up this week when China’s largest mobile phone maker, Huawei, said it would enter the market for premium consumer models.

Lenovo also competes with Huawei in mobile, which accounts for 18 percent of its revenue. The business’ loss widened to $566 million last year from $469 million a year prior on a 10 percent drop in revenue to $7.7 billion, though Lenovo said the business had strong growth in markets outside China, especially Latin America and Western Europe.

The company’s smaller data centre business, which includes servers and enterprise services, incurred a loss of $343 million, with revenue down 11 percent to $4.07 billion.

Yang said Lenovo’s core PC business remained solid, transformation for mobile businesses is on track, while it is accelerating efforts to improve its data centre business.

He said last week Lenovo will reorganise domestic operations in response to the changing PC industry. Lenovo China will split into two divisions: one focused on consumer PCs and smart devices, and the other on data centres.

Lenovo’s profit for the three months through March dropped 41 percent to $107 million. That beat the $93.8 million average of 11 analyst estimates in a Thomson Reuters poll.

Revenue rose 5 percent to $9.58 billion, against an estimate of $9.6 billion.

More than half of shopping-related searches come from mobile devices

For the first time ever, consumers all over the world carried out more shopping-related searches on their mobile phones than on their computers.

Data from the new Salesforce Q1 2017 Shopping Index analyzed the shopping habits of more than 500 million consumers in 27 countries, with smartphones coming out on top for the first time.Man using mobile payments online shopping and icon customer network connection on screen, mobile-banking and omni channel

“A couple years ago, if you were browsing Facebook on your phone and saw a jumper you wanted to buy, you had to wait until you got to your computer to log on and purchase it. However, now, with the evolution of mobile, we can easily search on-the-go and make a purchase instantly,” comments Jamie Merrick, director of Industry Insights at Salesforce Commerce Cloud (formerly Demandware).

“Given that the conversion rate of a shopper who has used a search function is three times higher than non-search traffic, this has a huge impact on UK retailers’ approach to commerce. Having a mobile-first approach is key to ensuring shoppers have a seamless and easy mobile experience so that retailers don’t miss out on revenue growth,” adds Merrick.

Salesforce’s report says mobile drove more than half (53 percent) of all traffic, and 32 percent of all orders, while shopper spend was increased six percent in the same period.

As for the UK, site search resulted in 35 percent of revenue, which is the highest rate in the whole world.

Sixteen percent of shoppers expressed buying signals, which is the highest rate ever outside a period that’s not Q4. Growth in spend slightly outpaced traffic growth, while the average order value increased three percent year-on-year.

“This trend in mobile search also highlights the importance of unified commerce across all channels — if a customer shops in-store, browses online or purchases on mobile, the experience should be consistent and as pleasurable for the customer as possible,” Merrick concluded.

Astronomers Find Giant Planet That's Hotter Than Most Stars

HIGHLIGHTS

  • A new planet KELT-9b is hotter than most stars, says a researcher
  • KELT-9b is 2.8 times more massive than Jupiter
  • It is more than twice as large, and nearly twice as hot, as our sun

Astronomers have discovered the hottest planet ever known, with a dayside temperature of more than 4,300 degrees Celsius. In fact, this planet, called KELT-9b, is hotter than most stars, according to a study published in the journal Nature.

“This is the hottest gas giant planet that has ever been discovered,” said Scott Gaudi, Professor at the Ohio State University in Columbus who led a study.

KELT-9b is 2.8 times more massive than Jupiter, but only half as dense.

Astronomers Find Giant Planet That's Hotter Than Most Stars

It is nowhere close to habitable, but Gaudi said there is a good reason to study worlds that are unlivable in the extreme.

“As has been highlighted by the recent discoveries from the MEarth collaboration, the planet around Proxima Centauri, and the astonishing system discovered around TRAPPIST-1, the astronomical community is clearly focused on finding Earthlike planets around small, cooler stars like our sun,” Gaudi said.

“They are easy targets and there’s a lot that can be learned about potentially habitable planets orbiting very low-mass stars in general. On the other hand, because KELT-9b’s host star is bigger and hotter than the Sun, it complements those efforts and provides a kind of touchstone for understanding how planetary systems form around hot, massive stars,” he explained.

Because the planet is tidally locked to its star – as the moon is to Earth – one side of the planet is always facing toward the star, and one side is in perpetual darkness.

Molecules such as water, carbon dioxide and methane cannot form on the dayside because it is bombarded by too much ultraviolet radiation.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5t2zJ-UEGv4?ecver=2]

The properties of the nightside are still mysterious – molecules may be able to form there, but probably only temporarily.

“It’s a planet by any of the typical definitions of mass, but its atmosphere is almost certainly unlike any other planet we’ve ever seen just because of the temperature of its dayside,” said Gaudi, worked on this study while on sabbatical at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California.

Its star, called KELT-9, is even hotter – in fact, it is probably unravelling the planet through evaporation. It is only 300 million years old, which is young in star time.

It is more than twice as large, and nearly twice as hot, as our sun.

Given that the planet’s atmosphere is constantly blasted with high levels of ultraviolet radiation, the planet may even be shedding a tail of evaporated planetary material like a comet.

“KELT-9 radiates so much ultraviolet radiation that it may completely evaporate the planet,” said Keivan Stassun, Professor at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.

The KELT-9b planet was found using the Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope, or KELT.
